Hamsters need toys and things to do in their cage, otherwise they will get bored. They also need a lot of exercise. The most important thing to be provided in the cage is a wheel. The wheel must be of at least 10″ inch diameter, with a flat running surface. This size will prevent their backs from bending while running. The Silent Runner 12″ is another good wheel available on the market. It is silent and includes a front plate that prevents your hamster from sliding down while running. It is 13.5″ tall with the stand, therefore it might pose some problems with fitting it in shorter cages. It is not available for purchase in the pet stores, but it can be easily ordered online for about $24 plus shipping.
The Carolina Storm Wheel (aka Bucket Wheel) is one of the best and most silent wheels on the market. It spins easily and even the smallest hamster is able to spin it without issues. It measures 11.2″ in diameter and it has a 13.5″ maximum height. It can only be purchased online, for about $24 plus shipping.
The Wodent Wheel is a decent wheel. It can be purchased online for about $20, plus shipping. However, it is quite hard to disassemble and clean. Other than that, it’s sturdy and reliable.
The Flying Saucer is a great addition to the standard wheel, either in the cage or during playpen time. The only disadvantage is that it takes a lot of cage space. It can be purchased in pet stores or ordered online for less than $20.
