Cages

A Syrian hamster needs a cage with at least 600 square inches of unbroken floor space, which usually is around 30″x20”. In the wild, hamsters run for many miles every night. Hamsters will not be happy or healthy in a small cage. Currently, the hamster cages that are sold in pet store are actually not appropriate for hamsters.
Check out below the cages recommended by us.

Glass tanks, such as the 40 gallon breeder tanks (and larger), make great cages, especially for chewers, because there is nothing to chew. They are providing a lot of space and also visibility inside the cage. This allow you to watch your hamster play inside its cage.

There are only a few options available on the market when it comes to appropriate bar cages readily available and none of them is available in pet stores. Most of the bar cages are fairly similar in size, but with different designs and different price points. One of the most affordable and recommended by us is the Prevue Cage 528.

Bin cages are hamster cages made out of storage bins. The cage of choice of many hamster owners. They are inexpensive, easy to make, easy to handle and they are stackable, by cutting windows on the sides and replacing them with 1/4 inch wire mesh. Our bin recommendations for hamster cages are the 50 gallon Sterilite bin (as minimum bin option) and the Iris Holiday Tree Storage Tote.
